Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

What can be said about this that hasn’t been said for decades?  Amazing.  So glad I finally heard it.  Way ahead of it’s time.  Sad to say, the only thing I really knew of the Beach Boys was that they were the old guys that used to play with Jessie from The Rippers…

The Stooges - Fun House

So I’m kind of cheating on this one.  Did I sit down and listen to Fun House?  No.  But I did go see Iggy and the Stooges live.  Never really listened to The Stooges.  It was a weird experience.  For the first time in many years, I was the youngest person at the show.  It was 90% middle aged band guys and old punks.  Certainly the most male ponytails I’ve ever seen in one room.

While I’m not crazy about the music, Iggy was amazing.  They played for 90 minutes and the guy never stopped running.  Stage diving, throwing the mic stand, posing.  Total rock star stuff, but he could actually pull it off.  Can’t deny he’s a legend.

Smoking Popes - Destination Failure

August 29, 2010

I knew it would happen at some point, but I missed a couple days there.  But in my defense, I had family in town.  So I’ve got some catching up to do.  Back on the horse today!

#7 Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons

In the interest of full disclosure, I had this on while we were playing Apples to Apples with some friends of ours.  So I didn’t give it as close of a listen as it probably deserved.  But it sounded nice.  Good melodies.  Really chill.  Will listen again.

#6 Radiohead - OK Computer

Another band/record that I would feel silly giving a proper review, as it’s been out for almost 15 years (yikes).  But Radiohead is a band that I’ve never given a true chance.  I’m not entirely sure why, but I know I was always annoyed at the collective boner that music critics had for them.  It’s the same reason I never listened to Wilco.  And Springsteen.  Maybe I just thought I was too cool to like something that everybody else loved.  I’m glad I got over that, because this is a pretty great record.  Duh.  I should learn to listen to music geeks more often…

Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back

The only thing that ran through my mind as I listened to this was “whoa, I am so not the kind of dude Chuck D had in mind when he was writing this”.
